ARDEER Thistle missed their chance to climb back into the promotion places after they fell to defeat against Glasgow University on Saturday, November 16.

Sean Kenney cut a very frustrated figure following the match, describing his side's 5-3 defeat as "a sore one to take".

The game was one which started in a near ideal fashion for Ardeer as they took a two goal lead in the away fixture within 20 minutes thanks to headers from Owen Densham and Jack Gibbons.

Glasgow University fought back to level the match before half-time, then taking the lead for the first time shortly after the restart.

Densham's second for Thistle levelled the match just before the hour mark to renew hopes of picking up all three points though these were quickly dashed when the home side were awarded and converted a spot kick on 63 minutes.

The game was then put beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining when Glasgow Uni scored the game's eighth goal and their fifth of the afternoon.

“Even up 2-0 I just knew we weren’t at it, it was false," Kenney told Ardeer Thistle's social media team after the match.

"We started alright, moving the ball nice, then it seemed to be the worst thing that happened to us.

“Instead of continuing to move it that way we were taking extra touches and were too slow with our passes. Our concentration was gone, we thought we’d cracked it.

“The goals that we gave away were as bad as I can remember from my time at the club.

“I can’t believe the goals we gave up, I don’t remember getting played through once – it’s terrible from us.”

Kenney was also frustrated by Thistle once again showing a lack of consistency, having won consecutive matches just once this season.

He added: “The better team won without a shadow of a doubt, they well deserved their victory.

“But to say we contributed to our own downfall is a mega understatement – it’s a sore one to take.

“Good players are consistent, I spoke after the game last week about not being a yoyo team.

“It’s hard to put words to it, the manner of defeat is really sore.”

Despite the defeat, Thistle remain fourth in the West of Scotland Football League Third Division standings, just two points back of the promotion places though they have played one match more than sides ahead of them.

The Stevenston side will look to bounce back next weekend, Saturday, November 23, when they host Threave Rovers with kick off at 1.30pm.
