ALLOWAY'S Scottish Women's Institute (SWI) has celebrated a successful November meeting.
The group entered the Ayrshire Federation Show in Troon and were 'well placed' with their exhibits.
One of their members, Anna, retained the Blue Riband Tazza for the most outstanding handcraft exhibit with her three favourite crafts displayed on a 12-inch cake board.
At the Alloway Village Hall coffee morning, the SWI provided food and ran the baking stall.
The event raised more than £800, which was shared equally between the SWI and village hall funds.
June Wiggins was the guest speaker at the meeting on Wednesday, November 13, and spoke about the history of cinema when silent movies combined with a variety of acts were an evening's entertainment.
She told how this expanded and developed when 'The Talkies' became available to show and purpose-built cinemas appeared, with Ayr having five at the height of its popularity.
The competition results were: A Snack for the cinema: 1st Marjory McCracken 2nd Violet Kennedy and 3rd June Foreman
A piece of Costume Jewellery: 1st Margaret Carson, 2nd Marjory McCracken and 3rd Violet Kennedy.
'Your favourite film star and why' was won by Violet Kennedy, 2nd June Foreman and 3rd Elizzie McCubbin.
In December, the group plans to hold its Christmas lunch at The Balgarth Pines, which will include a Secret Santa with a budget of £5.
