A FORMER Auchenharvie Academy pupil has been praised by the school for his recent award wins.

Connor Paterson, 21, was honoured with two prestigious titles at award ceremonies in Glasgow earlier this month.

He was named 'School Sport Volunteer of the Year' in the SportScotland Coaching, Officiating & Volunteering Awards, and also received the YouthLink Scotland Eric Liddell 100 Recognition Award.

Calum Johnson, Connor's former headteacher at Auchenharvie Academy, took the time to congratulate him on his volunteering and award win.

"He is a real asset to us and is a positive role model who sees red – in the best way possible – as he lives and breathes our school values of Respect, Equality and Determination.

"Well done Connor, I’m so proud of you."

Connor started his coaching journey in S3 as a pupil at Auchenharvie Academy.

He credits Active Schools and the school's PE staff for helping him get back on track during a difficult time in his life.

After graduating from the North Ayrshire Sports Academy, he is now a member of Team Inspire, where he mentors and supports new recruits.

Connor, who is a volunteer for North Ayrshire Active Schools, was nominated by his coordinator Leeanne McPhail.

He is one of North Ayrshire's most 'sought-after' coaches, known for his ability to inspire those playing football, basketball, and other sports.

Despite currently studying sports coaching at the University of the West of Scotland, Connor still manages to volunteer 15 to 20 hours a week at Auchenharvie Academy and its cluster of primary schools.

He said: "I have always had a love of sport and played football since primary school but never really managed to find opportunities.

"Now with the help of Active Schools I have been able to find my passion and use my role in sports coaching to raise awareness of the amazing sports sessions and opportunities available locally to help others to find their confidence and improve their lives."

Since graduating, Connor has become a mentor at Team Inspire 

Leeanne McPhail, Active Schools coordinator, said: "I am absolutely delighted that Connor has been recognised at a national level.

"Every week, he gives up so much of his free time.

"I am in awe of his commitment and how he is always seeking out ways to provide support and scaffolding to other children and young people."
