AMBITIOUS plans lodged could see a former Ayr church transformed into homes.

Bennet Land and Property Developments has submitted proposals to South Ayrshire Council for the former Free Church of Scotland on Kirkholm Avenue.

The church was previously used for religious events and private clubs such as the Guides and Scouts.

The site consists of two main buildings, surrounding grounds and a derelict outbuilding.

The developer wants to demolish one of the buildings, to create two new semi-detached homes.

The homes will be one and a half storey, with off-road parking and gardens included.

The former main Church Hall would undergo part demolition to the rear, and would be renovated to create two new semi-detached homes, also with parking and gardens.

Demolition of the smaller building was granted approval earlier this year by the council.

"We feel the proposals will certainly enhance the local area.

"Whilst surveying the existing buildings, all neighbours spoken to have expressed their support for the project, with no views of objection expressed.

"All other nearby neighbouring owner occupiers have also expressed positive opinions to the proposals and are delighted that the vacant buildings will finally be developed, enhancing the area and as a result, enhancing the local property values within the Kirkholm Avenue area."

If planning permission is granted, work could start on the site as early as this year, with the smaller building to be demolished as one of the first tasks.

In summary, the developer says it believes the proposals are "sympathetic" to the local area, and that the removal and remodel of vacant buildings can "only be seen as a positive for the local community".
