AN EAST Ayrshire school has been told to make 'necessary improvements' following an inspection.

Littlemill Primary School and Early Childhood Centre in Rankinston was reviewed by Education Scotland, who identified several key strengths and areas for improvement.

Inspectors highlighted that staff prioritise positive and caring relationships across the school, supporting children's and families' wellbeing, resulting in improved levels of engagement in learning among the children.

They also noted that teachers use various methods to enhance children's play and learning, developing their ability to discuss their learning experiences.

However, the inspectors noted several areas for improvement, which were discussed with the headteacher and a council representative.

These include the need for senior leaders and staff to implement policies and processes to raise attainment and achievement for all children.

A report said that the use of assessments and data to track children's progress more clearly should be developed further to plan learning that challenges every child to make the best possible progress.

Inspectors also advised that the quality of learning and teaching should be continually improved to enhance children's ability to lead their learning and be clear about their next steps.

The report added: "We think that the school needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements. We will liaise with East Ayrshire Council regarding the school’s capacity to improve.

"We will return to carry out a further inspection of the school within one year of the publication of this letter. We will discuss with East Ayrshire Council the details of this inspection.

"When we return to inspect the school, we will write to you as parents/carers informing you of the progress the school has made."

Education Scotland inspectors will return to the school within a year to assess progress.

The inspection was conducted in agreement with East Ayrshire Council, and parents and carers will be informed of the progress after they return.

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: "In June, Education Scotland carried out an inspection of Littlemill Primary. Following the visit, a report was issued which highlights many strengths found by the inspection team.

"This includes the prioritisation of positive and caring relationships that support the wellbeing of children and their families, which has improved levels of engagement in learning; and the worked carried out by teachers and practitioners to develop children's ability to talk about their learning.

"The report highlights a number of changes to the senior management team in recent years, which has had an impact on the school, and identifies a number of areas of improvement that the acting Head Teacher is working towards implementing with colleagues from the Education Service, including raising attainment and achievement."
