PLANS have been revealed for an iconic East Ayrshire theatre’s multi-million-pound makeover.
Proposals for the historic Palace Theatre and Kilmarnock’s Grand Hall include an extensive refurbishment of the existing building, along with a brand new front of house foyer extension, back of house facilities and fly tower.
Major upgrades are to be made to the inside of the venue, which include a new and efficient heating system, new electric, telephony and data installations, new toilets, and a general décor refurbishment of the existing spaces.
The redesigned foyer will also include a new café, which will be open to the public throughout the day and during performance evenings.
There are also many actions being taken to ensure the building is accessible, with the creation of a shared foyer and entrance to create a more inclusive visitor experience.
The main functions of the buildings will not change, as it is still intended to be used as a theatre, performance and events hub.
The plans went through several months of design development, including workshops with East Ayrshire Council planning officers, Historic Environment Scotland, EAC and EALT client representatives, and the building user groups.
The venue closed back in December 2023 for redevelopment as part of the area’s new masterplan which seeks to link and promote key cultural assets within the town.
This decision followed East Ayrshire Council receiving a £20 million funding package to create a cultural quarter in the town dubbed 'Cultural Kilmarnock'.
The sandstone building was built in 1862 and served as a Corn Exchange until it was converted to a music hall and theatre in 1903, which remains its function to this day.
Extensive works were carried out to form the Grand Hall in the 1940s, and in the 1980s the Palace Theatre was refurbished following a fire.
