A young man who shouted racist abuse in a Girvan takeaway, broke a window and made anti-disabled remarks at cops was given unpaid work.

Liam Hamilton pleaded guilty to charges of threatening behaviour and racial harassment after the incident in Bombay Cuisine.

The 24-year-old admitted causing fear and alarm at the premises in Girvan on March 31 this year and then at Saltcoats police office, after shouting, swearing, making threats and challenging others to fight.

He also broke a window, struggled violently with police and made anti-disabled comments to officers. The charge was aggravated by involving prejudice to disability.

Hamilton also admitted racially aggravated conduct 'amounting to harassment' of two named on the complaint, who were employees at Bombay Cuisine.

He also admitted assaulting a police constable on duty by kicking him on the body.

A warrant was issued for his non attendance when the case called just after 10am on Wednesday, July 31.

He later apologised for his absence when he appeared later in the morning – with an arrest warrant rescinded after the court heard his Stagecoach bus from Girvan was late when the case recalled.

Defence solicitor Ian Gillies told the court: "There is previous. He was placed on a community payback order on July 18, 2023 for 18 months, he is still on that order." .

He suggested the court 'might benefit from reports'.

At that time, Sheriff Maria Kicinski deferred sentence and continued bail. Hamilton, of Rowan Road, Girvan, was ordered return to court for sentencing at a later date.

When he finally returned to Ayr Sheriff Court last week, he avoided custody and was placed on a further community payback order and under social work supervision for 18 months.

He was also ordered to attend addiction services and complete 144 hours of unpaid work during that time.
