Police in Ayrshire have issued a warning over a new scam surrounding medical alarms.

A small number of reports have been made to North Ayrshire Trading Standards and Police Scotland Ayrshire regarding a telephone scam.

The scammer claims to be offering a free or discounted medical emergency pendant - the type you press to call emergency services after a fall.

The scammer may allege to be a health worker and may know some details of the person they are calling.

Card details are then requested from the recipient - for 'installation' or 'subscription' costs.

Having gained these card details, fraudulent transactions then begin.

According to data from TrueCall, over 900 scams calls of this nature have been reported by Scottish consumers over the past two months.

Local authorities will never ask for bank details from an unsolicited phone call. If you have already passed your bank details, call your bank immediately on a number you know to be correct. Report criminality on 101.
