People are being warned about a new email scam claiming they have won a giveaway.
Trading Standards Scotland has received reports of scam emails alleging that its recipient has won a tool kit, or similar prize.
Such scams often use recognisable company branding to give the feel of authenticity.
The scam often asks you to click a link - taking you to a survey to 'claim your prize'.
Such surveys usually request personal /financial information - ultimately, what the scammer is looking to gain.
The trading body has issued advice on how to combat similar scams...
- Go to the company "official" website to ascertain if the giveaway is real
- Received an unsolicited text or e-mail? Do not click links. Do not provide personal / bank details
- Check spelling & grammar. Scams often contain wording errors
- Read terms and conditions. Many scams have no terms, conditions, deadlines or how the winner will receive their prize
If you think you may have provided bank details to a scammer, contact your bank immediately on a number you know to be correct. Then contact Police Scotland on 101.
