A business could face a fine of up to £40,000 after being caught dumping its commercial waste into domestic bins in Kilmarnock.

Environmental enforcement officers from East Ayrshire Council detected the offence at Whatriggs Road in the town.

A spokesperson said: "During proactive patrols by officers at Whatriggs Road, a business was detected entering commercial waste into a domestic waste stream.

"This is an offence under Sec 34 EPA 1990 subject to vehicle seizure and fine of £40,000. The bins here are for residents use only."

Peter Mabon, Labour councillor for Kilmarnock South, says the issue has been going on for many months.

He explained: "I'm very happy to see this. I've been corresponding and meeting with EAC environmental crime officers and local residents for months on this issue.

"Big thank you to local residents who are watching and reporting the problems and the officers being active dealing with it."
