The crest of Stewarton is set to be erected at a prominent site in the town centre.

Planning permission has been granted for the 3.5-metre-high sign, which will contain the Stewarton crest.

The pole and sign will be located on an area of public land in the centre of the town, adjacent to Rigg Street.

The plans have been put forward by community groups Thrive and Stewarton Initiatives.

It will be erected near the newly-built Stewarton Community Hub, which is utilised by community groups and charities.

Stewarton Community Council has backed the proposals.

A spokesperson for the group said: "We are encouraged that the proposal will enhance the identity of our town.

Ayrshire Today:

"After consultation with the group, we have given permission for the use of the town crest on the post."

East Ayrshire Council planners granted permission for the sign with no conditions attached.

The planning decision states: "In regard to visual amenity, the proposed signage is not deemed to have a detrimental visual effect on amenity.

"The positioning of the signage does not give rise to excessive advertisement clutter and the signage is considered acceptable in terms of the design, scale and location, given it is displaying the Stewarton town crest within the town centre."
