Two Ayrshire nurses have been honoured by King Charles in a special reception at Buckingham Palace.
More than 400 nurses and midwifes from across the UK came together on the King's 75th birthday in celebration of the contribution from international nurses as part of the NHS.
Staff Nurse Hatina Tapatapa and Deputy Charge Nurse Jane Alfonso were both nominated by Jennifer Wilson, NHS Ayrshire and Arran's executive nurse director, in special recognition of their professionalism, continuous service and personal contribution to nursing in Ayrshire and Arran.
Jennifer said: “On behalf of NHS Ayrshire & Arran, I would like to thank Hatina and Jane on their high quality, compassionate nursing care.
“The reception at Buckingham Palace was a great opportunity to celebrate the dedication and commitment shown by nursing staff in their service of others within our communities.
"Hatina and Jane’s commitment to providing care is an inspiration to us all.”
Hatina works at the combined assessment unit at University Hospital Crosshouse and says meeting King Charles was a special moment.
He said: "Being nominated and selected to attend King Charles' reception at Buckingham Palace made me realise even more as an international staff nurse my commitment, dedication and contribution to nursing is noticed and appreciated.
“I shook King Charles' hand, a moment that shall inspire me to work even harder and discharge my duties as a worthy staff nurse. I shall ever be grateful.”
Jane, who works in the acute cardiology care unit at Crosshouse, added: “I am not one to seek or strive for recognition but I was humbled to be nominated and honoured to attend King Charles' reception held at Buckingham Palace.
“I was proud to represent NHS Ayrshire & Arran as an international staff nurse.
"I have worked in University Hospital Crosshouse for 23 years. Over that time, my job has truly given me endless opportunities and the best experiences in my nursing career. I will continue to serve to the best of my abilities.”
NHS Ayrshire & Arran continues to welcome internationally educated nursing staff and started a new programme of international recruitment in February 2023.
