Plans for a new mural in Kilmarnock celebrating the work of Robert Burns have been given the green light.

Kilmarnock Business Association, in partnership with East Ayrshire Leisure, East Ayrshire Council, and the Robert Burns World Federation, applied for permission for the gable end mural in John Dickie Street.

The work will feature on Civic Centre North, the prominent building which houses the Robert Burns World Federation.

The partnership has selected acclaimed artist Michael Corr to design and install the mural, from a pool of 33 talented artists who submitted applications.

Peter Telfer, chair of the Kilmarnock Business Association, said: "We're delighted to have Michael Corr on board for this exciting project.

"His artistic talent and passion for community engagement make him the perfect choice to create a stunning mural that will enhance Kilmarnock's cultural offer."

Councillor  Douglas Reid, leader of East Ayrshire Council, added: "This mural will add vibrancy and character to our town centre, reflecting Kilmarnock's rich heritage and artistic spirit.

"After the tremendous success of the Countess Ann mural at St Marnock Square, the community expressed a strong desire for more public art and we are committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to the cultural growth of our community."

One objection to the application was received, criticising its design, colours and likeness to the national bard.

However, council planners approved the application with conditions, stating the objection was not enough to reject the proposal.

The installation of the mural will take place some time during 2024.
