A PAIR of free agents have featured as trialists for Kilmarnock FC's reserve side.

Gary Mackay-Steven and Lewis Strapp were among the starters for the Rugby Park side as they faced Ayr United in the quarter-finals of the SPFL Reserve Cup.

The match itself saw the Honest Men progress in the competition, coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win courtesy of a double from Mark McKenzie - after Bobby Wales had given the home side the lead.

But the two new faces in blue and white may well have been what caught the attention most of any fans in attendance at the clash.

Former Celtic, Hearts, New York City, Dundee United and Aberdeen star Mackay-Steven is a face familiar to current Rugby Park boss Derek McInnes - a known admirer of the player.

The 33-year-old winger was known to have been training with Killie earlier in the season, though back in October McInnes said he did  not think “there will be anything imminent” in terms of a potential deal.

The Killie manager coached Mackay-Steven during his spell in the Aberdeen dugout, and did add that his current club were "quite open" to seeing where things lead.

The other trialist was former Morton full-back Lewis Strapp - who has been without a club since leaving Cappielow at the end of last season.

The left sided defender played 71 times for the Ton during an eight-year spell in Greenock, which also included loan spells at Elgin City and Annan Atheltic, but has not made a competitive appearance since January this year due to injury.
