AYRSHIRE MSP Sharon Dowey welcomed Ayr Parkinson’s nurse specialist Nicholas Bryden to the Scottish Parliament as her ‘local hero’.

MSPs selected their local heroes, who attended the Scottish Parliament’s 25th anniversary ceremony in Edinburgh.

However, Nick was in the United States attending an event relating to his work with Parkinson’s, so he was welcomed to Holyrood by Sharon Dowey last week.

Nick has been working to improve the delivery of 'Time Critical Parkinson's Medication' in hospitals, with his work leading to significant improvements.

He has been recognised at award ceremonies by other health boards in Scotland and the UK.

Nick has also been involved with Parkinson's UK, helping to shape their 'Time Critical' literature featured on the Parkinson's UK website.

He was invited to speak at a 'Time Critical Medication Summit' hosted by Parkinson's UK in London as well as addressing the Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and other high-level decision makers about his work.

Nick enjoys making wooden items in his spare time, such as Christmas trees, bird tables, benches and many more.

The proceeds from selling these items have, over the last few years, allowed Nick to spend more than £8,000 on treats for patients and staff at the Biggart Hospital in Prestwick where he is based.

He has also donated to local food banks and has gifted several benches to hospitals and charities.

Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Ms Dowey said: “It was a real pleasure to host Nick and his guests at the Scottish Parliament to celebrate his nomination as a local hero.

"I put Nick forward for this recognition because of all the incredible work he does within the NHS to make a difference for those living with Parkinson's.

"His passion and dedication are truly inspirational, and I am proud to see the positive impact he has had on patients and staff alike.”
