A DOON Valley brass band took top honours at the West of Scotland Brass Band Association's contest on Saturday.

Held at Troon Concert Hall, the line-up featured 14 of the best brass bands from across the west of Scotland, featuring a fantastic range and variety of music.

The musical competition was judged by Shona Wade, known as 'the voice of the tenor horn', while the entertainment section was judged by Doon Valley native Donald L. Reid, now a councillor in North Ayrshire.

The Dalmellington Band won the musical competition, with Campbeltown Brass taking home the top prize in the entertainment section.

The Dalmellington Band also picked up several individual and sectional awards at the event.

Donald said afterwards: "Every single band played and performed in a most entertaining way, some bands having singers and one band had the entire band singing at one point!

"Among the pieces performed I really enjoyed were Let Freedom Ring; Deep Harmony; October; California Dreaming; Fire in the Blood; Peterloo Overture; Be Thou My Vision; Irish Blessing; Be a Clown; Pearl Fishers; Georgia on My Mind; Eriskey Love lilt; Boom Boom; Top of the Pops; MIss Blue Bonnet; Hushaby mountain; Dixie; Lullaby Seal; War of the Worlds; Ritual Firedance; Son of Zorro; and several themes from various James Bond movies.

"Thanks to the West of Scotland BBA and to the SBBA for their hard work in organising this competition."
