The summer is almost over for young people across Ayrshire as they get ready to head back to school.

Pupils across the region will be trying on their new uniforms, sharpening their pencils and making plans for first day back hijinks with their friends.

But when do pupils head back to classrooms across all three Ayrshire localities?

North Ayrshire's pupils return to school on Tuesday, August 20, with an in-service day for teachers the day before.

Arran schools also return on the same date, with teachers on the island also in school the day before.

In South Ayrshire, pupils also return to the classroom on Tuesday, August 20, with in-service days for teachers on both Friday, August 16 and Monday, August 19.

In East Ayrshire, pupils have an extra day of their summer holidays as they don't return to the classroom until Wednesday, August 21.

Teachers are in school for the two days prior, on August 19 and 20.

The first set of holidays for all regions is the September holiday, starting late in the month.

In North Ayrshire, pupils (but not staff) are on holiday on Monday, September 23.

In both South and East Ayrshire, schools are closed on September 20 and 23.
