Dean Castle and Country Park is an excellent free day out for all the family with visitors able to explore a well-preserved 14th-century castle and a number of beautiful parks and woodland walks.

Run around at the Ayr Seafront

With playparks to keep the kids occupied and impressive views out over the Firth of Clyde, Ayr seafront has something for everyone.

If you want to explore a few shops and cafes, the seafront is also close to the town centre.

Visit the 'impressive' Dick Institute 

Boasting an 'impressive' museum collection that is said to be the biggest in Ayrshire, The Dick Institute is great for those damp and miserable days.

From old suits of armour to exhibits exploring the area's recent history, there will be something to gauge everybody's interest.

If you're looking for something to get the little ones outdoors, the Fullarton Fairy Trail is an ideal and whimsical adventure.

The route is also popular on Tripadvisor with one user writing: "This is a lovely treat, tucked away on the outskirts of Troon. Brilliant woodland walks with fairy houses and carvings along the way to keep little ones amused.

"Good park, clean public toilets and nice picnic spot. Kept an 11, 9 and 3-year-old happy for an afternoon - which says it all!"

Another added: "We visited recently for the first time in a while, it's a great place to spend a few hours in nature, especially for kids and dogs, it's got a good fairy trail, swing park, free toilets, plenty of benches, etc.

"It's definitely worth popping down."
