A FIRE which broke out at a Kilmarnock school is now under control, according to East Ayrshire Council.

The issue affected part of Kilmarnock Academy on the morning of Friday, May 24.

It is understood that a "minor fire" broke out in the William McIlvanney Campus with pupils made to evacuate the building.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service quickly attended the incident and secured the small impacted area of the campus.

The issue is now under control with all pupils and staff returning to the building as normal.

An East Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: "Following a minor fire at the William McIlvanney Campus this morning, the fire service attended and secured a small area of the building.

"All pupils and staff are now safely back in the building - we commend them all for carrying out a fast, effective and safe evacuation."
