Ayrshire postcodes have seen one of the highest rises in uninsured driver convictions in the UK, new data has revealed.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by iCompario to the DVSA and regional police forces has revealed how many motorists have been convicted of driving without insurance.

The request revealed that, out of more than 150,000 UK drivers caught driving without insurance, the KA postcode has amassed one of the biggest increases of uninsured drivers caught behind the wheel, year-on-year.

The figures reveal that one in every 295 license holders has been convicted of driving without insurance in Ayrshire KA postcodes since the start of 2022.

This number is 4% more than the UK average of just over one in 300, and a 27% year-on-year increase.

Whilst the KA postcode is the highest in Scotland, it sits behind Torquay, Northampton and Llandrindod Wells postcodes for the rest of the UK.

Motorists driving without insurance could receive a fixed penalty of £300 and six penalty points on their licence if they are caught driving a vehicle that they are not insured to drive.

Andrew Davies, spokesperson for iCompario, said: "The fact that hundreds of thousands of drivers are risking a criminal record, penalty points, and financial strife for themselves and anyone they could potentially be involved in an accident with, is deeply alarming.

"Rising car insurance costs coupled with rising living costs across the board are a potential worry, as it would be very problematic if the rate of uninsured drivers on UK roads were to increase in the coming months and years.

"We would urge UK motorists to shop around for the best possible car insurance deal, and to avoid making a bad decision that they are likely to regret by driving without proper third-party cover."
