ScotRail is one of the UK's best train companies for commuters, according to a new study.

Research from Moneypenny found that the operator, which runs services north of the border, was the third best in the country behind Greater Anglia and Avanti West Coast.

The study looked at who offers the best service for regular commuters, rating factors such as free Wi-Fi, food service, quiet zones and the availability of plug sockets.

ScotRail scored highly thanks to its free Wi-Fi and plug sockets, but was let down by its limited food service and lack of quiet zones.

It was given a score of 78.1/100, just behind Avanti West Coast on 79.1 and Greater Anglia on 80.2.

A spokesperson for Moneypenny said: "The trainlines ranked are based on how good they are for commuters.

"To do this, 10 factors were collected and indexed to create a score out of ten.

"The higher the score, the better. For example, if the trainline had completely free Wi-Fi they would receive a 10/10 score for that factor.

"The values were then added up to give each trainline a score out of 100, the trainlines were then ranked from high score to low score."
