A North Ayrshire running coach has been hailed as a community hero after picking up a top award at the Scottish Sports Awards 2023.

The awards, hosted by sportscotland and Team Scotland, celebrates the success of individuals, schools, clubs and teams across Scottish sport.

Billy Roberton was honoured as the Scottish Community Hero of the Year 2023, for his inspirational attitude and dedication to his athletics club.

Billy has been described as the heartbeat of Kilmarnock Harriers, with whom he has volunteered for many years.

Regardless of age, ability, background, or gender, Billy can see an athlete in everyone and with this mantra, he has helped to train several national and international champions this year.

In May this year Billy suffered a life-changing accident when he was struck by a car while cycling to the athletics track.

He sustained injuries including a broken hip and shattered leg and was later told that his leg would need to be amputated.

He was told that due to the nature of his injuries his life would need to significantly change and that walking would be off the table for the rest of the year.

Despite the heart-breaking prognosis Billy was back at the track in his wheelchair in July, helping to push Kilmarnock Harriers forward as the largest community club outside of the cities.

Mel Young, chair of sportscotland, said: “A huge congratulations to Billy and all of the winners at this year’s Scottish Sport Awards.

"The calibre of talent we have seen at this year’s awards ceremony is once again testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone across the Scottish sporting system.

“Every year they provide us with a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the power of sport and recognise people like Billy, who commit so much time and dedication to their sport and to their athletes."

Ian Reid, chair of Commonwealth Games Scotland, added: “Billy stood out for his incredible commitment to helping others in the face of his own adversity and the recognition is truly deserved.

“They should be rightly proud of all their achievements and contribution to sport.”
