Dundonald Castle has been reopened to the public.

The local historical landmark was closed to allow for the removal of the scaffold tower at the front of the castle.

Removal work from Historic Environment Scotland and City Access took place over the last week.

Charity Friends of Dundonald Castle said in a statement: "We are delighted that Dundonald Castle, one of Ayrshire’s premier cultural attractions, has reopened to the public after being closed to allow for the removal of the scaffold tower at the front of the castle.

"FoDC would like to extend a massive thank you to the teams from Historic Environment Scotland and City Access for their hard work in completing the repairs and removing the scaffold, as well as our visitors and local community for their patience throughout the process, it has really been worth it to make it safe for everyone to enjoy again.

"The castle is partially reopened allowing visitors back onto the grounds and inside the main laigh hall and great hall of the castle, boasting a magnificent 650-year-old barrel-vault ceiling.

"Visitors to the castle are accompanied during their complimentary tour by one of FoDC’s many passionate and knowledgeable volunteer guides who bring the rich history of the site to life.

"You can book your tickets online in advance or pop into the visitor centre on the day.

"The visitor centre museum is a great place to begin exploring the site’s long history before enjoying our newly launched menu in the coffee shop.

"We also have a small gift shop filled with lots of local suppliers, crafters and authors and host a number of popular weekly community groups."
