The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has issued essential tips and guidelines for safely using candles, tea lights, oil lamps and oil burners this Hallowe'en.

Ayrshire revellers are being urged to use battery operated candles where possible, to reduce the risk of fire.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "Candles can create a spooky atmosphere on Hallowe'en but they can also be a fire hazard if not used properly.

"Consider using battery operated candles, which give the same light effect without the risk from flames."

Some tips for candle safety include never leaving a burning one unattended, using sturdy candle holders made from non-flammable materials, and keeping the flame away from clothes, curtains, cushions and paper.
