North Ayrshire and Arran MP Patricia Gibson believes the opening of Largs Viking Festival was a “huge success”.

The SNP MP was a guest of honour as part of the opening parade alongside MSPs, councillors and the area’s provost.

Mrs Gibson has praised organisers of the festival, which runs until Saturday, for putting on such a great show on the opening day.

She said: “The weather was beautiful with massive crowds thronging the parade route and enjoying the delights of the Viking Village and assorted stalls thereafter.

“I and Kenneth Gibson MSP, Provost Anthea Dickson and Garnock Valley councillor Margaret Johnson were all in attendance and thoroughly enjoyed the festival.

“Well done to the committee, chaired by Douglas Blair, who have worked so hard to ensure this great success and fantastic showcase for the town of Largs.”

There is plenty still to come from the festival, including a dual Spitfire display over both this Saturday and Sunday, with a provisional time of 1pm.

There will also be the spectacular battle re-enactment, burning of the longboat and fireworks display, which takes place on Saturday evening on Largs seafront.
